Need advice for suitable distro to install Oracle DB + Application Express

Hi guys,

Like the title said, I need advice on which distro is suitable to install Oracle Application Express (including Oracle DB on the same server).

I read from this post that the Oracle DB itself is only installable on either Red Hat or Oracle Linux or SuSE. I take it that means Ubuntu Server is out of the questions already.. :(

Since we're just a small home company, I'm trying to find a cheaper (if not entirely free) solution for the Linux distro, and I decided to try CentOS instead, since I read that it's basically a free (?) version of RHEL. Problem is, my internet is on an extremely low budget (like, just 3 gig a month.. :( ), so I decided to do a little bit of R&D before a start busting my limits...

So, any advice from anyone who have tried installing Oracle DB on CentOS? Is CentOS really a full free version of RHEL which only difference is the support (community support vs comercial support)? Any other distro more recommended than CentOS?

Thanks in advance guys. :)

By the way, I'm not new to Linux, but I've been waaaaaay out of practice from years of (forced) using Windozz..

Don't know if this is of help or not. Hope it's a place to begin, though!

Welcome back!

RHEL, CentOS, Oracle Linux?

Thanks for the link and welcome-back, hilyard.

It seems that DB2 is also recommending either RHEL 5.6 or 6, SLES 10.3 or 11.1, or Ubuntu 10.04. So I guess I'll just try either RHEL or CentOS.

Anyway, anyone ever compared between RHEL, CentOS and/or Oracle Linux? Are there any noticeable differences beside the fact that RHEL is the commercial version, CentOS is the community (free) version of RHEL, and Oracle Linux is, well, the Oracle version of RHEL?

Update:
For my first post on which distro to install Oracle, I found this thread by LXer on how to install Oracle DB XE on Ubuntu Server. I'm going to try it now on my VM. Thx LXer! :)

I still want to know if anyone ever tried comparing RHEL, CentOS, and Oracle Linux. As in, is it guaranteed that apps that runs well on RHEL, will also runs well on CentOS? Thanks.
