I'm trying different Linux distro on my PC (no virtual) I will try 10 of them and make a top 10 best Linux distro in my opinion. If you have any to recommend me trying say it. The one I already tried yet are: Arch Linux, Debian and Linux Mint and the next one I will try is Open Suse.
I would suggest Scientific Linux (a desktop distro based on RHEL) or CentOS, Mageia (the direct descendant of Mandrake), and Slackware (the oldest named distro that's still supported, being a few months older than Debian and Red Hat). That, along with Debian and Mint (which is based on Debian through Ubuntu, should give you a pretty good sampling across the three main streams (Slackware-based, Debian-based, Red Hat-based) of Linux distros.
I might recommend SPARKY, VSIDO, Fedora, TinyCore, CentOS, Slackware, and Gentoo. Depending upon what you are looking for. Perhaps also Elementary, Damn Small Linux, PUPPY. If you are not fixated on Linux, you might also try FreeBSD, some people like it very much.
I have some other OS options I have tried, but they are not very 'linux like' and not likely to be what you are seeking.
i use ScientificLinux 6.7 every day BUT!!! it is NOT my default operating system
for that i use OpenSUSE 13.2 and use SL6.7 for the NASA/JPL software i use that needs it
this spring / summer it will be OpenSUSE leap when i upgrade
Yes, I know there is no best operating system. By best I mean my favorite and I already tried OpenSUSE leap and it work very good for me. I also tried Scientific Linux but I don't have much to say about it since it's not really my kind of distro I installed it just to test. Right now I am on Ubuntu and will change again until I get to 10 and my best distro will be the one I will use.
All of them are my favorite! ;-) I LOVE exploring new operating systems and finding what makes them special.

Rep:
I find a good relationship can take time and patience to develop -- so it is with distros.
I use Debian on my machines, and I'm always looking into Slackware but I've had fun with Mint and Fedora has always caught my eye.
I don't generally like a distro based upon a distro which is based upon a distro and, Mint aside, I do stand by that.
