check out Debian Etch... it's the 'testing' release.. but it's plenty stable... if you have a decent internet connection, i would recommend using the businesscard ISO... it will just boot up to the Debian-Installer, and allow you set up your partitions, configure network, then it will download everything it needs from the 'net... I just did one on my notebook... and it comes with 2.6.15...KDE 3.5...etc.. and Debian has a HUGE package repository... the biggest of all Linux distros...

I've also got to go with PcLinuxOS.

Everything just works.

Package management and selection is superb.

Another recommendation for PCLinuxOS. It fits your criteria perfectly. It comes with KDE and Fluxbox, the Synaptic package system works great, and the system defaults are thoughtful and comfortable (for me, at least). I'm a long-time Slackware user and have used Kanotix (Debian-based), Mepis, Ubuntu, Mandrake, SuSE and countless others. Tinkering is fun and can teach me a lot, but now I'm at a stage in life where I need my system to "just work". PCLinuxOS does that for me.
