Multimedia Slackware

Ive heard that Suse is a very good distro in terms of Multimedia stuffs. Can anybody verify this. What multimedia softwares/codecs does suse have that slackware dont? The only close to outstanding movie player that runs in my slack is totem. Everything else has problems in fullscreen mode when playing avi files. Actually i tried to download suse cant see any good mirrors. Am i wasting my time with suse?

I am suprised with the fact that some user like you report problem with fullscreen mode, for my part I has a lot of problem in the past but never with this, in fact when mplayer did not work, I wasn't abble to open a file. Did you try to press 'f' to access fullscreen in mplayer ? What is your video card and cpu ? And I will add that compile mplayer yourself can help.

I dont use mplayer. Im referring to the movie players bundled with gnome and kde (kaboodle, noautun?,gxine, etc). Only totem works with fullscreen when playing AVI files. I havent played other formats yet. But even totem has problems once in a while (blue screen sound only). BTW im using nvidia geforce2 64mb and athlon xp 1700+.

Moved: This thread is more suitable in Linux-Distributions and has been moved accordingly to help your thread/question get the exposure it deserves.

This is because it is not specific to Slackware, not is it specific to SuSE.

whoever told u SuSE is great for multimedia LIED... suse have crippled xine, totem, kaffeine... u have to find packman rpms if u want anything decent, slackware is better IMHO but saying that Gentoo works wonders for me

Or install from source...which makes for an excellent multimedia system. I don't think one distro is any better than another for running particular apps unless you're just talking about bundled packages.

Yeah im referring to bundled players, codecs, and drivers. Guess i need to try mplayer.
Thanks for clarifying about suse. :study:

gentoo is a source distro...

as for SuSE, depending on ur linux skills, but compilling xine from source and limking it will gtk and xine -libs may be a hard job for a noob.

was just giving him the easiest advice. slackware comes with all the codecs btw, the only thing needed to compile on ur own would be libdvdcss, and voila u can play dvd's as well.
