mouse pointer always busy

I just installed debian 6.07 from the netinstall cd (i386) onto oracle vm virtualbox and even at the login screen, the mouse pointer always shows busy. The only window manager available was TWM (Which I hate with a fiery passion), so I installed the latest LXDE from synaptic. Once logged onto a lxde session, the mouse pointer appears normal, but at the login screen, it still shows as busy.
