Mandriva or SuSe

Mandriva LE 2005 or SuSe 9.3? Please explain the advantages and disadvantages of each

If you want bleeding edge packages, then go for Suse 9.3. It as KDE 3.4, GNOME 2.10, beagle and mono. If you don't care much about the latest features and prefer a something a bit stable go for the Mandriva 2005LE release. The default Suse installation has some multimedia capabilities disabled e.g. mp3 support is only available in RealPlayer but this can be fixed with an upgrade using YAST. Personally I think they are both good distros would find it very difficult to choose between the two.

What do I need to upgrade off of Yast in order to gain MP3 support?

reddazz 06-01-2005 04:30 AM

Suse should automatically update packages like kdemultimedia, so that you can get mp3 support.

One last thing, how can I change the resolution of SuSe to give me more options? All I have right now is just 1024 x 768, I wish to have available 1280 x 1024. Is that an update I can get from Yast or is that Video Card related? I have a ATI Radeon 9250 PCI Video Card.

that should be video card related. You should be able to adjust your resolution by running sax2.

Moved: More suitable in Distributions.

I preferred Mandrake over SuSE for years, but SuSE 9.2 and later has finally swung me the other way... now I'd much prefer SuSE.

Having said that, I don't use either of them.

SUSE is definitely way to go.

BTW, Regarding beagle on latest suse 10.0, check this link out:
