Mandriva and PCLOS's ability to select a different distro from the logout screen

Mandriva features the ability to select from its logout screen the distro you want to boot into, rather than selecting it in GRUB after the system restarts. Being derived from Mandriva, PCLinuxOS can also do it. I would just like to say that this is a useful (if not vital) feature which any distro should offer. I've never seen it elsewhere, though.

I had the impression this was a KDE feature (more properly perhaps kdm)---I've seen it also on OpenSUSE.

Curious how they do it....
