Mandrake 9.1 and Unicode : problems

Hi...

I tried to install the 9.1 distro (2 CD ISO image from the mandrake site) on my toshiba tecra laptop and had a number of problems: Here are the result of my various attempts:

1. Install with "ALL UNICODE" option, and the install hangs towards the end (after displaying errors about not being to install perl, emacs and openoffice). I was hoping to have a complete UTF-8 java app running on this system, but I guess that will have to wait

2. Insall with "US_English" option, and the install displays the same errors but completes, but when I log in, the X window system does not show me any of the regular apps and icons and so forth.

3. I switched to a 8.2 install, which is fine for now, but I would really like to get 9.1 working, esp with the unicode option enabled.

any help would be much appreciated..

Cheers

b
