Mandrake 8.1 KDE anomolies...

All of my KDE apps incur a significant delay on launching. Commenting out
the lines in my /etc/resolv.conf fixed it, so obviously there is a hostname
that is trying to be resolved whenever I launch any KDE app. I checked my
/etc/hosts file and the names in it are correct.

How can I log what is being asked for by the KDE environment, so that I can
track down the problem?

Thanks in advance!

Actually, all you should need to do is put "files" as the first entry for hosts lookup in your /etc/nsswitch.conf file:

hosts: files dns

I suspect your $DISPLAY is in the format <hostname>:0.0. Your machine probably doesn't have a DNS entry so it's having to wait until your DNS servers time out before checking /etc/hosts.
