make your own live cd

I've been thinking about building my own distro for awhile now, but I'm not sure how to go about doing what I want to do.

I want to build a LiveCD, maybe with the ability to install to HDD.

How should I do this?

Should I start with LFS, Gentoo, Debian base install or remaster DSL?

Would dd if=/dev/<path to partition> of=mylivecd.iso take care of the ISO creation?

Note this is a spare time project for now.

The operative word is remastering. There are guides on how to remaster a live cd. Check Knoppix, Slax and DSL.

I'm not very sure if one could remaster clear down to the base system or not. Basically, I'm aiming for a distro that doesn't come with X Windows (ie is CLI only). Starting from scratch sounds like a better bet.

I attempted to remaster Knoppix in a number of ways, and only one of them managed to make an ISO.

And that one won't boot. This was the method used .

Obviously I need to take another approach, perhaps starting from scratch.

Anyone know how that's done or what I may have done wrong?

i asked a similar question here:

http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...hreadid=220971

morphix is a great choice if you wanna remaster, it's made for you to "morph" it into whatever you need...

anyhow, the best guide i've found (so far) for making a live cd almost from scratch is this:

http://www.babytux.org/articles/howto/how2livecd.php

just my two cents...
