lpd can't bind to port 515 (RH 8)

Hi guys,

My computer :
Celeron 433 @500, 128 MB PC100 RAM, HD 20 GB Q, Elsa Erazor III LT (Riva TNT2 M64), printer : canon S100SP USB.

My problem :
lpd won't start, can't bind to port 515. I change the port to 516 in /etc/services and it works fine. Later it failed again. What's going on ??

Thanks

What does `netstat -anp | grep 515' show?

I see
Code:

tcp    0  0 0.0.0.0:515      0.0.0.0:*      LISTEN  597/lpd Waiting

Can you post your output?

Cannot Bind to lpd port 515

I am having the same issue. The response message I get is as follows.

tcp 0 0 0.0.0.0:515 0.0.0.0:* LISTEN 705/xinetd

What should I see at this point? Do I need to change the 515 in the /etc/services file to 705?

Thanks,
Ron

can't bind 515...

did this ever get sorted out? i tried the "change to 516" route which worked for a bit, but i don't like that i can't bind to 515 for some unknown reason...

my netstat -anp | grep 515 gives something similar to the one above with xinetd, not the lpd Waiting message... confused.

what's up with RH 8.0... this never happened to me with previous version of RH.

can't bind 515

here's the answer (at least on my machine)...

it seems this bug WAS NOT corrected in the RH 8.0 release. I ran the chkconfig and restarted everything and could bind fine to 515... everything is good now.
