Introduction to Linux - A Hands on Guide
This guide was created as an overview of the Linux Operating System, geared toward new users as an exploration tour and getting started guide, with exercises at the end of each chapter.
For more advanced trainees it can be a desktop reference, and a collection of the base knowledge needed to proceed with system and network administration. This book contains many real life examples derived from the author's experience as a Linux system and network administrator, trainer and consultant. They hope these examples will help you to get a better understanding of the Linux system and that you feel encouraged to try out things on your own.

I Just booted the Ubuntu LiveCD-5.04. It has a very nice startup display, and when it launches the desktop, it looks pretty good. However; by the time an application loads I might very well be dead. Is there a way to optimize it? Is there a Linux LiveCD distro with the performance of Slax and the features of Ubuntu? (Other than Slax , which I cannot use in the U.S. )
Actually tried out Puppy Linux and
boy is this impressive!!
LinuxQuestions.org should host an LQ Forum for this just as it already does for DamnSmallLinux(DSL)
Maybe the LQ powers-that-be consider DSL this an offshoot of Linux From Scratch(LFS) from which Puppy was derived??
You probably need to try some linux live based livecds, like GoblinX, Myah, Loonix and Wolvix, livecds running linux live scripts are faster than others, because of the boot.
You can also rebuild your Slax to include your own modules...
