Since you have not mentioned the Desktop environment you are using, I have attached below the screenshot of what I get on right clicking the main menu icon and then clicking Menu Editor on KDE!
When you click on the New Item on the top of the window shown below, you can actually add the software you want, look closely!
Now its your turn to look for such option in the desktop environment you have!

You may have to create the menu item yourself. The executable of the programs you installed should be in /usr/bin or /usr/sbin-- you can check the installed files by selecting the package in Synaptic and viewing "Properties".
Since you have not mentioned the Desktop environment you are using
sorry about that, but I believe mine is GNOME. And one more thing - I'm actually using a dock with the cairo menu, so I had to go in as root user to right-click.
