Well I'm sure it's in a FAQ somewhere, or just a Googling away, but I'll bite .

FreeBSD is based on BSD (Berkeley Software Distribution), which was developed (funnily enough) at the University of California at Berkeley.

Linux (the kernel) was created by Linus Torvalds, and improved upon by him and hundreds or thousands of hackers across the net, between '91 or so up til the present. Distributions started to appear quickly (Linux the kernel + GNU free software utilities).

The timeline for *nix history in general is very complicated; check this site.

They are separate entities, neither strictly based on the other. BSD has been in development since the latter half of the 70s.

They are similar in that they are both implementations of a Unix-like kernel and the distributions based on each of BSD and Linux contain similar software. There are many implementation differences/similarities; I'm not the person to ask about that, though .
