Too bad it is on a DVD. Not everyone has a DVD burner.

ctkroeker 06-23-2005 02:15 PM

BTW, I think it's a DVD and only available via bittorent. Thats to bad, if it were ftp or http I would download it.

J_K9 06-23-2005 02:24 PM

Why are the Knoppix developers doing this? I mean I know bittorrent is meant to save bandwidth and therefore more people can download it more quickly, but I completely agree with you craigevil....have they just tried to shove too much into one CD/DVD? I personally think they should've at least included at stripped-down version of Knoppix 4.0. (I'm assuming here that from my pathetic attempt to read their "English" site - which is mostly still in German - that they aren't making a CD version and that the DVD is going to be the only release....a pity....

From their site:

Quote:

Starting from version 4.0, the KNOPPIX-project will be split into a DVD "maxi" edition, and a "KNOPPIX light" on CD, both developed in parallel.

O....in that case I take my last post back! :p

Their latest release sure has a LOT of software with it.
just a preview:
GNOME Office, KOffice, OpenOffice and who knows how much other stuff.

It can be optained from here

ftp://ftp.freenet.de/pub/filepilot/l...ystem/knoppix/

Just take the large iso.

But even when im sitting from a 10 Mbit connection, it says that i will take about 7 hours to download.

oneandoneis2 06-29-2005 04:13 AM

Eh. I'll stick with DamnSmallLinux - downloads in about 5 minutes and boots up in a tenth the time as well ;)

winsnomore 06-29-2005 04:52 PM

I have downloaded and have been trying it for a couple of days.

Live DVD runs flawlessly .. it's german only release, but you can set the lang and be in business .

It's the best ever . I think all other debian flavors could learn from it.

I found a couple of issues after installing it to the hard disk, but nothing significant, I was able to get it do behave normally in about 20 minutes.

I had tried 3.9 and got fed up with annoying problems with HD install (live CD always worked fine .) .. but this one is great, it has the most recent software and tons of it.
Only thing it doesn't have is sun's java and consequently Azureus .. which I plan to install on my own.

2 thumbs up .. try it .. you will love it.

ctkroeker 07-07-2005 02:51 PM

I would love to try it, but I do not have a DVD burner:mad: , nor will I get one soon. Do you know when the "light" version comes out? And where I can download it? In English of course.

You should just check knoppix.com every once in a while.

winsnomore 07-07-2005 11:13 PM

You can always burn cd's .. only 5 to go

craigevil 07-08-2005 12:27 AM

1) How do you go about breaking it up into multiple cd's.
2) Which cd would you use to boot from and how would you access the apps on the other cds?

The 'lite' version has yet to be released.
