Kernel config file - recovery disk

While trying to recompile my kernel to add support for multiple serial ports, I ran into a little issue called a kernel panic....

My Debial 3.0 cd said that it can be used as a recover disk, can anyone explain how?

Also, I want to design a new kernel (panic free please), so I want to take my origional kernel config and modify it slightly. Where is that config file? I did find one config file in /boot, but it looked more like it had default settings and not the configuration I created during installation...

thanks

put the cd in and at the prompt type "linux rescue" or something similar.
