Question Installing on a linux on a small hard drive...which distros can/should I use?

I know there are probably several distros that fit this description, but I've come across an old PC laptop I'd like to make a 2nd Linux box out of.

It's got 32MB RAM, and a Pentium 100 CPU.
I know plenty of distros that can run at that speed, but it also is limited to a 500MB hard drive, and has no CD drive.

So, what are my options now?

My Linux experience is still pretty limited, I've installed the last few iterations of Red Hat/Fedora and Vector Linux on my PC without any problem, but I haven't branched out any farther than that.

Any advice/tips/ideas would be much appreciated.

Thanks!

Sounds like you'll need to do a network install of Debian. Get the floppies and the base system, you'll have to download. Its about 30mb. You'll not be able to do a lot with that drive, but you should be able to check email and surf the net with it (or turn it into a firewall...). Go with a lightweight windowmanager like Fluxbox, XFCE, IceWM, or Windowmaker, and you'll be fine.

some links

Hi,

To install from the Internet starting up from 3-4 floppies:
=> http://www.debian.org/distrib/floppyinst

To those who can read French, here is a very good document for installing Debian:
=> http://people.via.ecp.fr/~alexis/formation-linux/

Have fun!
