Install XFree86 on SUSE 7.3

Hi,

I have tried to install XFree86 4.3.0 on SUSE 7.3. At the moment I am working with XFree 3.3.6 bit I would like to enhance the display quality of fonts because I often use Openoffice.

For this I downloaded XFree86 4.3.0 (for glibc 2.2) but until yet I suffered to make it run on my computer. E.g. after starting XF86Setup I receive an errormessage of the keyboard server and after choosing the keyboard nothing else can be configured.

Does anybody have an installation guide for installing XFree86 4.3.0 on SUSE 7.3?

Thanks in advance,
Micha

The SuSE program to configure XFRee86 is called sax2. Login as root and run sax2 from the command line. sax2 will lead you through the configuration.

This is assuming that the version of sax2 on SuSE 7.3 is compatible with XFree86 version 4.3.0. If not you may try downloading a later version of sax2 and try that.

I successfully upgraded XFree86 on SuSE 8.0 using the sax2 supplied with SuSE 8.0. I do not know if you can successfully do it on SuSE 7.3.

Hi Steve,

thank you for your answer.

sax2 tells me that my system is configured for XF86_S3 which is the x-server of XFree86 3.3.6. After that sax2 stopps and recommends me to use sax. But with sax I have no success in configurating XFree86 4.3.0.

For the moment I have switched back to version 3.3.6 looking for a appropriate installation guide.

the generic tool for configuring that version of xfree
is xf86cfg

One more question before I try again: Do I have to make any changes to my startx-script after the installation of XFree86 4.3.0?
