If i redesign the look of Linux will it become a separate distribution?

Right thanks for reading, if i redesign a Linux distribution i.e change slash screen, colours, change the apps that come with it, change the name etc. will it become a separate distribution that i could then offer to the public?

Yes. You can do whatever you want to do. If you offer it to other people then it will, by definition, be a unique distribution.

ok thanks for the help i will tell you when its finished

Take a look at the hundreds of distros listed at Distrowatch and ask yourself how many are fundamentally different or unique.

If I understand correctly what you are doing, my only question is: Why??

Wouldn't it be better for everyone to try and help a current project?

I think that we should be helping to improve the current mainstream projects, rather than creating hundreds of other smaller ones which do not differ sugnificantly.

The people who try to learn linux use LFS, those who try to get their names attached to a distro as their creators, make cosmetic changes to an existing one and call it a "new" distro.
That's what I think, anyway.

tomcdyer 06-10-2007 09:20 AM

Well i think that is prity accurate.

But why do people want to get their name attached to a distro that is just a small modification to another? I wouldn't.
