Thumbs up Identify system distribution

I like to know how can I identify which distro I'm running (like: redhat, suse, debian, ...)

thanks

Thans for your answers, but my problem is: I have several machines at my clients which have diferent kinds of systems, and I'm trying to make a script that can identify the operating systems.

Type 'cat /etc/*release' on a terminal.

Example:
Code:
$ cat /etc/*release
Yoper  Linux  2.0 (for i686)
Yoper Linux is my distro. Yay!

vxc

Uhhh....uname will only give you the OS name (GNU/Linux) and the nodename/hostname (by default "Knoppix" on Knoppix, yos on yoper etc...).

vxc
