I want to upgrade from Ubuntu 8.04 to 12.04

From what I've read, I think I need to upgrade from Ubuntu 8.04 to 10.04 and then to 12.04. The suggestion in Ubuntu User Magazine about upgrading from 8.04 to 10.04 is NOT
to use the accompanying DVD, rather to do the Upgrades via the Website. What will happen if I try that at this point? Will I be able to stop at 10.04 and from there use the 12.04 DVD to go from 10.04 to 12.04?

I recommend you back up all your files and documents and do a fresh install of 12.04.

I did this and found the following

1. As recommended by snowpine, backup everything and did a fresh install
2. after the upgrade my network card stopped working. I need to run some commands after reboot everytime to start the Network Manager.
3. The sound card also had some issues.

I was running (ubuntu 8.xx) and 10.04 for 3 years never had issues.

just to be sure I would check the compatibility of the drivers before upgrading

Excellent point by newpreludeking that you should test-drive 12.04 before committing to the upgrade. There have been a great many changes in Ubuntu over the past 4 years, which you should evaluate via Live CD/USB before making your decision.

If you have a good internet connection, you can type this in command-line:
Code:

sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
You may need to change your repo to 12.04 first.
Hope that helps.
