Hi all,
I am somewhat in a pickle...I have an Archos 9 and it's getting somewhat of a challenge to get something going on that thing. I use it mainly (only, actually) to listen to music over the Net and to read my web mail...and...yea to read the news online....
Music n surf, actually...
There used to be this Joli OS...but, that's gone now...
Actually, I'd like to install Chromium OS on there, but I have doubts that's possible...
Any input is welcome
Melissa
My first thought, after reading you link was "Oh dear!" As a tablet it needs the Unity or Gnome desktops, but it's described as very slow. But it seems that Ubuntu will be OK: the secret is getting the video drivers: http://www.ossramblings.com/installi...rchos-9-tablet
Incidentally, a recent review at DistroWatch weekly decided that Gnome is the best desktop for a touch-screen.

Oh yes....well, if I can get it running it's saving me 195E for a second hander...
Let's try Ubuntu, really the only one I have NOT tried, because I though it's be too hard on the lil' thing

Edit - bamm, the installer crashed trying to set up the locales. the bug is known...I can not install anything Debian based newer than...
A Mint 13, that I get installed, but it's EOL, as I cannot get any updates...

The bug is in the installer Ubiquity, so you should be able to avoid it by using the alternative installation disk. Unfortunately (here we go again) that's now only available for Lubuntu. https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Lubuntu/Alternate_ISO
LXDE is useless on a touch screen, but you could install Lubuntu and then add Gnome.
Alternative ideas would be Korora (Fedora with all the patented stuff added) or Bridge (an installation disk for Arch available with Gnome).

Hmm, I could...or...take defeat and hook up a keyboard and mouse...
Touch'd be great, I'd go get a new battery for the thing and drag it all over the place

To sum up, it seems to be a case of
1. install Lubuntu with the alternative CD
2. add video driver
3. sudo apt-get install gnome-shell
4. select gnome at log-in.
Good luck!
