I'm new to Linux and I've been thinking of installing Suse 9.1 on my laptop.
My first question is if I can get it for free or do I have to pay now?
Cause I found it at an ftp site but there's no .iso file to download and later burn on CD's like before.
Can't figure out how to download an then burn on a CD to have a working distribution...
To get the free version of SuSE, you have to perform a network install... There is a small boot.iso on the FTP server. You burn that to a CD, boot it, set-up your network and point it to the FTP server, choose the packages you want installed, and it will download only those packages.
Or, you can download all the packages to a computer on your network, have it serve the packages, and point the network installer to that computer. You have to download more packages this way, though.
There is also a Live-CD on the FTP server. You boot it, and SuSE runs straight off the CD. This way, you can try it before installing. Since it runs off a CD, it is a lot slower than running off a hard-drive. The Live-CD might also be able to be used as the boot-CD to install, in case you really like it and want to install.
I've looked at the ftp sites and found a boot.iso but somehow they only exist on the older versions of Suse.
If I want Suse 9.1 where can I get it and please if you have time how do I do this.
All I seem to find under the 9.1 folder are som gcc rpm files etc. Atleast nothing that tells me that the 9.1 version is there.
the ftp site I've been looking at is ftp.sunet.se
I've also looked at a german ftp site with the same result.
Please help!
I found it for sale at Amazon.com. Got a "generic" burn of it from someone who burns the disks and sells them pretty much at cost of the disks, like CheapBytes. I'm sure you could buy the boxed set at Frys or somewhere. I hear the download will be available after June 4th?
BTW I'm upgrading my main machine this weekend. I've already upgraded a Sony VAIO Laptop successfully -- I've been very satisfied with SUSE 9.0 but want the 2.6 Kernel.
Note : if you want DVD playing then you'll have to download Ogle / whatever software you use and install it yourself (as per previous release) as there's still this BS licensing issue with DVD playing.
Remove the suse 9.1 multimedia stuff and download Ogle and Libcss to get it working.
Also I've been using the Windows driver to get my Linksys 54g (Cisco version) Wireless card to work so keep the data from your previous install and re-enter the Mac and License stuff and it should work.
Dude - your Estonian site contains the exact same 9.1 content that's available on every other Suse mirror site, meaning that the source rpm's are available, but as the README indicates, the Suse 9.1 "install via FTP" has not yet been released. If they stick to the schedule they've published, it should be available June 4.
