How to control screen size in Fedora
I have a desktop computer with Windows XP and a Compaq 1700T laptop wth Slackware 10.2. Recently, I replaced my desktop system with a barebones system which uses a ASUS A8S-X motherboard with a AMD Athlon 64 CPU and a Hitachi 160GB Serial ATA hard drive.
My first problem is that I could not install Slackware or freeBSD (which I like in that order) onto the barebones system because of a "Kernel panic: attemped to kill init!" error. Has anyone any idea why I can not put linux on my new hard drive? My second problem is with Fedora 4. I also have an older Maxtor ATA hard drive on my desktop system. In the past, I have successfully installed Slackware 10.2 or freeBSD onto this Maxtor hard drive, but in each case had to spend a lot of time trying to get everything (email, browser, server and lan networking stuff) working -- mainly due to poor documentation and many people on the internet with the same problems but with zero or conflicting answers. My only problem (so far!) with Fedora is a trivial one. In trying to set up Evolution, the setup screen tells me to "click the forward button to continue"; however, the forward button does not exist or is behind the bottom KDE panel. How do I reduce the height of the Evolution setup screen so that the forward button is accessible? |
Have you tried pressinc CTRL-ALT-+ and CTRL-ALT-(minus)?? On my system this switches my X-windows desktop between the defined resolutions set in my Xorg.conf file. For example, if I hit the above combo once I go to 640x480, again for 800x600, and again for 1152x864 (my preferred resolution).
I. e. when you get to the Evolution setup screen where you can't see the "forward" button, try hitting CTRL-ALT-PLUS and see what happens. If successful, your screen resolution might go higher and you'll be able to reach / see the "forward" button... |
Screen Size
Thanks rylan76 for your reply. CTRL-ALT-+ etc does not work on my distribution. At one time it was frequently necessary to change /etc/X11/xorg.conf. Today this not usually necessary so it did not immediately occur to me to do that. After I received your reply I changed the SubSection "Display" in my xorg.conf where the Depth is 24 from Modes "800x600" "640x480" to Modes "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480". Now I can access all of my Evolution setup screen.
