What version of Ubuntu are you using? If you are using version 4.10 The Warty Warthog Release Canidate then go to the top menu bar in Gnome, click on computer, then System Configuration, and then Synaptic Package Manager. Once there select all and scroll down to amsn. double click it and it will ask you if you want to mark the dependicies, click yes and then apply. It should install without any problem.

Edit: It will be installed in your /usr/bin directory. To get it somewhere easier to access you could put it in your home diretory. Go to Applications on the top menu bar, then system tools, then root terminal. Type in your password and then type in ln -s /usr/bin/amsn /home/your user name here/ It installs version 0.92. The latest version is 0.93.
