I've been using Slack 8.1, and very recently 9, even installed dropline GNOME, did all the font work I could try (freetype installs, downloading of various fonts), and am still running Slack on my laptop at home.
At work, I'm giving RH 9 a try as it cooperates with some server software I'm testing out. (or should I say, the server software doc was written with Red Hat in mind).
Its astounding how good the fonts look on this thing. And I know bluecurve is the cause of controversey, but it is hands down the easiest distro. on my eyes that I've tried. Period.
Now, I still enjoy Slack for its speed, and its actually easier for me to configure Slack down to exactly how I want it to perform. RH seems to have really said "these are all the apps you need, and don't change it please." Had to go looking to find certain KDE apps. And on my laptop, RH 9.0 isn't really an option, as it only has 64mb of RAM. And I really enjoy the Slack community here on linuxquestions.org--best responses I've ever received when querying for help.
But in terms of direct competition for Window users' eyeballs, RH is winning, IMO.
I would also add this:
SuSE 8.2 looks better to the eyes, and has better multimedia support for the home user. It has included support for MP3's and Redhat does not.
