hey Gentoo users
i am a newbie and i don't know anything about Gentoo
can any gentoo user tell me how is it and if it is easy to install and work on or need a prof in linux i have read the site but u know users' opinion is more important and reliable |

All I can say is that I'm installing it right now and so far everything seems to have gone well. I'm following the instructions to the letter pretty much and IMO they are very well written. I'll post back when I finish up. So far is hasn't been very hard though and I'm definetly not a "linux professional"
I would be sure you know how to use fdisk and set up the partitions correctly. That's what normally gets me :) Try it out, can't hurt anything :D |
ok about fdisk
it sure need partitions with ext2 or ext3 right
what about the size |
That's all in the Download/Install instructions on the website. They'll get you going. Just read them carefully and don't skip or you'll get to start over (like me  )
have fun :D |
Well my personal opinion about gentoo linux is that it is the most stable and reliable linux distro i have used IMO. The Instructions need to be read carefully, and read after each instruction alittle bit becuase you might miss something, like me. Good luck.

ok
i'll read the installtion guide carefully
but it says that it need a partition with ext3 but i don't know how to have such a partition cos i am using partition magic 7.0 and it only supports the ext2 and it is too old can onyone help me |
I used partition magic too. All u have to do is make a 3 partitions, root it can be whatever size u want, i have mine around 10gb. then u need a boot partition around 50mb and a swap mine is 100mb. format them all ext2 except teh swap which is swap. Then just follow the instructions until u get to the partitions part. when u get there just use the mke2fs -j /dev/hdXX command for ext3.
I love this distro the only bad thing i can think of is that it takes a while to install. especially the emerge system part. and compiling kde takes way too long. and u really need to read teh instructions carefully and read after every command they tell u cuz they have extra hints and info. |
oic
abfetr ur words i think i will not install gentoo now
and leave it after my final exams so i can be free to spend alot of time config it thanx all for help and anyone got anything new plz tell me in this thread i really want to learn more every second |
I dont see anywhere that it recommends EXT3 for the partition type, actually you'll be much better off with XFS.
