Guys , this is my first time installaing linux , i ahve the 2 ISO discs burned on 2 different CD's , i installed both of them and everything went fine , first CD done and asked me for CD and done , till last step was about creating a boot disk , so i skipped and said no to that and rebooted , but when it reboots i get black screen and nothing comes up , i have done it twice so far but same thing , and i also configure my moniter and setting during installing , please help
make that boot disk. It is probable that when it boots for the first time it will set up a bootloader for you. It would help more if we can have the distribution you are using.
Well you'll have to make a boot disk, then go to /etc/lilo.conf,include your file name and then give lilo. Well have your given MBR as an option during the installation ??
What distro are you using and how are you installing the boot loader during the install ?? Have you tried to create that boot disk and does it work after creating it ??
Also try to make more useful thread topics when posting instead of just Help Me...
Thanks to you all guys , i really apprecitated , i created the boot disk and it's working fine , but another question , why do i have to keep the disk inserted , how can i boot it with the out the floppy , and also it doesn't go to linux interface screen , not sure what you call teh screen , but the desktop screen , now it stays at the command line after i put my user ID and pass work , how can i go to the red hat screen that looks similar to windows , help please
n the console, try:
startx
or
xinit
That should start the graphical interface.
or log in as root, and run
gdm
or
kdm.
That should start a graphical login chooser screen.

Use LiLo. Boot from your boot-floppy, log in as root, edit your /etc/lilo.conf file so that you have an entry for both Linux (should be there) and Windows (might not be there...but there's already plenty of instructions on how to add one on this site). Ensure that near the top of the file, the place where Lilo is installed to is hda rather than hda1. Save the file, exit the editor, and type lilo. If it works (which it should), then you will be boot to a menu where you can choose between Linux and Windows. If it doesn't you, at least you can boot from the floppy and sort things out.
