Hang after "Freeing unused Kernel Memory"

Hi,

Been running linux for a year now but still not very good with big problems. Recently I replaced the PSU in my Linux machine & BIOS took a nice decision to loose everything -

Having set it up again (from memory!) & switched back on, 95% of the time, the machine hangs at "Freeing unused Kernel Memory", on rare occaisions it boots all the way to login & stays up for a while, before having a kernel exception (after around an hour)

RH6.2 (no space for upgrade on this machine), 256meg RAM, 6gig HDD

Any help for a befuddled newbie appreciated!

N
