Graphics advice to new SuSE 8.2 users.

Graphics advice to new SuSE 8.2 users.

After nearly a week of frustration, I have discovered that SuSE 8.2 does not enable graphics accelleration by default. This is how to enable it...

////////////////////////////////////////////////////
// //
// Just because it worked for me does not mean it //
// will work for you! Follow my instructions at //
// your own risk!! //
// //
////////////////////////////////////////////////////

If you run YaST / Hardware / Graphics Card and Monitor:

Select 'change' button,
select the 'graphics card hyperlink' and the 'expert tab'

Under 'card options' there is a list of options. Only NoAccel' is selected. Click it to deselect and Accept the changes.

My windows move better, smoother and faster - and my dvd player now runs the various graphics modes properly so I can watch dvds.

(If anyone knows how to get 3D acceleration working - please post )

I've just installed SuSE 8.0 (not without problems) and when checking the config info I noticed that the hardware acceleration was not selected by default. It's good for me that nVidia has drivers on their site for Linux, since 8.0 didn't support GeForce4s. I take it that it's the drivers for the card that bring good support for any 3d card capabilities. Good advice though, thanks.

I'll get around to upgrading to SuSE 9.0 when I find the time/feel the inclination to download the ISOs and learn how to upgrade (have never done it). I have to admit that reading my NTFS partitions sounds yummy.

I got 8.2 free with Linux Format, but I plan on buying 9.0 because the manuals are supposed to be excellent. A user oriented one, and an administration guide. If you buy that and an O'Reilly Linux book, you'll be a competent user in no time (that's my plan anyway )

Yeah well my 8.0 manual is in German, which I read at least 2 times slower than English... I just couldn't wait to plunk down bucks for that package, but I didn't install it until over a year later. Long story... Let's just say I'm not yet a competent Linux user. I would fully encourage you to to buy distributions though if you can afford it. The market needs user support.
