Good Multimedia / Compatibility

What do you all suggest for a good multimedia distro? I'll be using things like editing in audacity and rosegarden, and just listening. I have an M-AUDIO Uno 1x1 USB / MIDI Interface between my computer and keyboard. Good video wouldn't hurt, but it's not my main concern. The computer is a Dell Dimension 8400 bought around December 2004. I have a SoundBlaster Live! 24-bit and a 3.39 GHz Pentium 4 with HyperThreading. The computer also has a SATA hard drive, so I'll need compatibility for that.

I use Slackware with the 2.6.12.1 kernel to do everything you do. But if you want an easier distro, you can try Ubuntu (not very good to start with, but if you can make it good...) or SuSE.

SuSE is good for multimedia. It's basically great right out of the box, and comes with quite a bit of multimedia programs. When installing it, choose to perform an online update...and install the multimedia packs. Works very nice and easily. Of course though, you have to manually install some codecs (which is just a matter of copying some files to a folder :P).

I'm curious: did you get your Linux system set up to recognize and use the M-Audio Uno 1x1 USB interface? I tried and never got it to work. If it works for you, could you post how this happened? Much appreciated!

wow, completely forgot this thread existed... I don't think I ever actually tried... to be honest I stuck with Windows for a desktop and Linux for servers, at least for now. I've actually thought more seriously about switching completely recently. Thanks for posting a reply, though, it reminded me... I'll have to play with that, and if I ever get it to work, I'll let you know.
