Good distro for old PII server ?

I have an old P2 233MGHz with 192 mb ram as a music file server and was keen on switching from Win2000 to a linux distro but i cant think of any suitable for the job. i am looking for something small, with XFCE desktop and samba networking.

i tried debian 3.1 but it was non-responsive. after installing it dumped me into a console and i couldnt startx or use apt-get to install xdm, gdm or even kdm as it kept saying there were "uninstallable" packages.

appreciate any help.

Slackware, perhaps? Try a recent Debian version with minimal install.
