Good Distro for my old pc specs

Hello,

My specs:

Pentium 2, 300Mhz
3 Gigs of Harddrive
160 MB of RAM
Video card: Voodoo 3

I am interested in Xubuntu(there are two versions 6 and 7, which one would you recommend).

I have also heard of NetBSD, Deli, and Ubuntu lite.

Could you guys recommend some distros that are secure, easy and yet would be fast on this pc

Thanks

I run Debian on a similar box. How new are you to linux? The way I install Debian is to just install a base system (i.e. command prompt only), then use aptitude to install programs I want, including a lightweight gui (icewm), and lightweight applications like abiword (word processor), gnumeric (spreadsheet), syphleed-claws (email), etc. When I boot my machine, it's only using 34MB of RAM.

The light distros you mentioned above do similar things, i.e. use a lightweight window manager and lightweight applications by default.

A few other choices I've never used are Damn Small Linux and Puppy Linux.

Edit: You can also go to distrowatch and search. Enter "Old Computers" for distribution category and "i386" for architecture.

ok thanks for your input.

I am fairly new so I would like a gui to set it up for me

Perhaps when I am more experienced, I'll try debian

I'll also give zenwalk a try as well

thanks guys

Typically, I would always take the newest stable version (which I think is 7.10) because it will have newer software and all the important security patches.

I used Slackware on a similar PC a while ago. It was quite stable.
