Good distro for an iMac G3?

Hey . . .got an iMac recently from a friend, and OS9 isn't cutting it for me any more, so I wonder if there are any decent n*x distributions out there which will run on one of those -- with its default hardware.

Lemme know?

You might try a Ubuntu live CD first to see if all your hardware is supported, but I know Debian and Ubuntu both support PPC (Mac) architectures. I'm sure other distros do also.... Maybe check out distrowatch...

gentoo works well on my power book (333Mhz G3 320Mb) I hear debian (ubuntu is based on debian) and gentoo are the best for ppc. I wouldn't use gnome or kde and expect decent results, but I'm using xfce and it is quite responsive considering how slow it is :)

AFAIK the original iMacs and my powerbook are almost identical and all my hardware works (my pcmcia slot isn't set up but this is because I don't have a use for it. I know others have this working.)

Thanks, I installed Ubuntu and I think I'm going to try out the FreeBSD/ppc port some time in the future.
