Gnoppix & Knoppix Screen Resolution

Hi guys,
it's been a while since I visited/posted to this place. I've got a question...
I'm having the same problem with Gnoppix AND Knoppix live distros.
I have a 15" screen with max resolution of 1024*768 & 32 bit color depth (used in Win Xp), with an ATI 9000 64MB video card. When using those distros, I get a max. of 800*600 resolution. That can be quite a problem - I get those giant windows with all the buttons and titlebar off the screen (especially in Knoppix)...
So, is it the nature of live distributions (they ramdisk cannot handle hi-res), or is it my ATI card? Can I fix it? Get some drivers or what?

p.s.
knoppix has a cheatcode screen=1024x768 depth=32, but, as you're probably guessing, it doesn't work (I tried it with both 2.4 and 2.6 kernel)

Oh, yes, I almost forgot, Knoppix is 3.7 and Gnoppix 0.9 (both the latest versions)

thank you

Hi,

Even though I'd almost bet it's due to the ATI card it's worth checking xfree to see if your monitor is being picked up correctly. A slight tweak to your refresh rates and restarting X might work. As to the video card, I received an ATI 9200se 128mb for Christmas (It's the thought that counts) and I've been relegated to 800x600 in knoppix. I didn't have any troubles running 1280x1024 &24 with my nvidia geforce II 32mb.

One thing you might want to try is GamesKnoppix which just came out last month I believe. It comes with ATI and NVIDIA drivers included. It had no problems at all supporting my ATI card at 1280x1024. I know it's not knoppix 3.7 but at least it gives me something to cling to in my hour of need.

There's a link on the knoppix.org homepage. And there goes my first post.

Thanks for the reply, Sye d'Burns :)

Actually the thing is really puzzling me, since couple of days ago I gave Morphix LightGui 0.5.4.1 pre-, and, even though thedefault boot options was 1024*768 screen, Morphix booted with 800*600. Then I tried cheat code 1280*1024 - and it worked!! I had a 1280*1024 screen on my tiny 15" Phillips 105E monitor (which got recognized every time)... Note that 1280*1024 resolution doesn't even existwhile I'm under Win98se or WinXpPro...
I had installed working versions of Mandrake 9.1, Fedora Core 3, Vidalinux Desktop OS 1.0.1 beta Download Edition and now I'm writing this post in Vidalinux 1.1, always with the 1024*768 resolution...
Well, now it doesn't even matter since I managed to install Linux on dual boot without screwing up WinXp OS (and I'm quite certain it's because I left Win98se OS)...
