Gnome vs Kde??

Hi.. I'm a newbie in this Linux stuff, I have Xandros 3.0 Deluxe on my desktop, and I have a question that has been on my mind for while now. What is the difference between GNOME and KDE? Because I've found some software that "works on Gnome" obviously I don't install it because I have KDE (looks better for me), but I don't know if a can install it and it'll still run just fine, is KDE better than Gnome?; in a more technical aspect not just because it looks better.

Thank you for the help... or more appropriate the knowledge...

they are both window managers
they are both desktop managers
they just do things differntly
most gnome programs will work on kde and vice-verca`
gnome is GNU
KDE may use other licences also

They both do basically the same job, GNOME is just a little more lgihtweight than Kde. They will both run each others apps provided the correct libraries are installed and if you use Kde I suggest you have the gtk-qt-theme-engine package installed (I think that's the correct name) so then any GNOME apps you run will look like they fit in properly :)

When I started in Linux I like gnome more, but now I like kde... Gnome increased his size and become heavy like kde, but kde allows, with more facility, to control everything... and I've released a distro when all graphics works are new and all themes and icons are the same for every program, so kde is better to work and modify the desktop...
I never see a gtk2 theme that change everything in gnome... you install a theme and just few icons will change... I don't like it...
I create a gtk2 theme that change gnumeric, gimp and other gtk2 apps, but a few icons on gnumeric didn't change, so I have to recompile gnumeric...
Abiword I can't change icons on menu...

For who doesn't like that gtk default theme, gnome is very boring.
