Smile get gnome back


i was updating my xfree and al of a sudden my gnome gui is gone and in its place is a gui that starts with 3 xterm windows and another that says xsm:default at the top. Can someone tell me what this is and how to get it to boot into gnome again?

I tried clicking on system and selecting gnome in the login screen but it still loads this other gui

help...

Sounds to me like X has reverted back to using it's default TWM window manager. I couldn't tell you what might be causing that though, installed a new Window Manager recently?
