gentoo - x86_64 software fallback

I noticed that in the Gentoo package repository, some packages are avaliable for standard x86 IA32 architecture but not the new AMD x86_64 architecture. If a package is avaliable for 32 and not 64, will an amd64 install automatically fallback and download/install the 32-bit version? If not, is there a way to configure it to do this, or can the amd64 install only use packages specifically designated as avaliable for amd64?

If you have installed the 32 bit libraries as well as the 64, your processor can run either.

More specifically, in gentoo, when you emerge a package that is only 32-bit, gentoo will automatically install the 32bit libs necessary for those applications. You may already have the necessary libs installed, in which case it won't re-install them (of course ;) ).

Cool
