gentoo stage 1 install prob

I'm trying to install gentoo stage 1. Everything was going just fine until i got to the step were i was instructed by the install docs, at gentoo.org, to use the passwd command to make my new pass for the system. When i enterd the command i got a command not found error. At first i believed i had screwed up the chroot because i had deviated (the only time) a little bit from the docs by swithing to tty2 (from tty1 were i chroot'ed originally) and chroot'ed again so i could have an extra console in the newly installed system, however i no longer believe this, because i rebooted and chrooted back in to the new enviornment just like the instructions said. Next, i tried 'emerge -e world' that didnt help, then i tried 'cd /usr/portage && scripts/bootstrap.sh' that didn't work either. I'm at a loss of what to do next, with out starting over. I find this really bizarre this is probably the fifth time ive installed gentoo stage 1, and the second time on this system, except for this new video card, although i dont see why that would matter, and ive never had any problems of this nature. thx in advance.

My System:
asus k8n-e deluxe
athlon 64
new hdd working perfectly under windows
geforce fx 6600 gt

It does sound like you might be outside of your chroot. Do a 'ls /mnt' and make sure there's no gentoo listed there... if there is, you're outside the chroot. Also, do a ls /bin/passwd and see if passwd is there.
