Gentoo Speed Improvements

Hey all,

I was just wondering... By compiling all of Gentoo's portages, compared to Redhat 7.3, what is the improvement?

I'm running an Athlon XP 1600+, 256MB DDR, Asus A7V266-E/AA. Does it really make a difference if all the portages are compiled for an Athlon system?

Also, what optimizations should I use for the make.defaults?

Ta.

I don't think that optimizing stuff for processors like these will make too much difference. Obviously, if you're running a v. low end machine, then optimizing is a good idea, but you're not, so I don't think it's necessary.

Well actually in overall system responsiveness you would see a noticeable difference -- not sure how large as I don't have such specs
