Gentoo SOund

I am using gentoo and fluxbox and can't get sound to work. In previous Slackware installations I used alsamixer to control the volume and stuff worked well. No in gentoo compiling with the USE=alsa flag I have no command alsamixer and no sound! I do an emerge -vp alsa and it appears to want to recompile the kernel. I tried it, still no alsamixer still no sound. Any ideas on what I may be doing wrong?

No, I have trouble finding documentation about single aspects in thier documentation. It must be a personal problem though. Most the time I even find a document and unless I bookmark it I never find it again.
