One of the stated advantages of a source based distros is that you don't have to wait for packagers to decide the time is right, you just compile.
Ok.
Does that work with everything that uses make or is some kind of gentoo compile-config file necessary before that works, ot resolve dependencies for example ?
afraid i really don't know what your trying to ask... just like any other distro, gentoo still relies on it's own package system. just like redhat needs rpms, gentoo needs ebuilds, if they don't exist then the package management is just as stuck. just happens that portage on gentoo gets a vast number of updates on a daily basis.
