Gentoo on dell poweredge 1850

Hi People,

Did anyone try installing gentoo on dell poweredge 1850? I am having a hard time making it recognize my scsi drives which run on raid controller.

Does anyone have any ideas how to make them visible?

Thanks!

Did you try doscsi when the boot prompt comes up? I have never installed on a SCSI drive before but I remember seeing that option. I have read where a lot of Dell servers are Linux ready so it should be doable if you can figure out what controller you have. I have just never had the pleasure of haveing one before.

Hope that will help get you on the right path.

Gentoo is one of greatest Linux distros, no doubt. However, nothing is perfect. IMO, Gentoo install disks are their Achilles' heel. Try installing from Knoppix (or any other LiveCD that recognizes your hardware).

Thanks for suggestion, wonder how it never crossed my mind. I'll give it a shot tonight.

Thanks again,

I use the Gentoo CD all the time and it works fine. It does take a while to boot since it looks for all the hardware and all. It works great though.

Where can I download a copy of Knoppix? I want to look at thing thing and see what it looks like. I have cable now so it won't take so long to download now.

:) In my experience Knoppix does best job in hardware recognition.

re: Gentoo on Poweredge 1850

Ok,

the trick was to use the right architecture. The poweredge runs the xeons, which are EM64T architecture. So you have to pick the amd64 gentoo installation media. Once the stage is installed, modify kernel to run on EM64T architecture, and in the make.conf use the '-nocona' flag.

Runs like a dream.
