Question gentoo installation reboot error

I am on a amd64 , a8v-mx (vt8251) with sata seagate hd.
i installed gentoo almost according to the handbook with an ubuntu 6.06.1 live cd.
i did a manual compile of kernel and since i am not very adept i have probably chosen many options not required by my hardware.

Problem: when i reboot the computer stops with the message
pd version 1.05 major 45 cluster 64 nice

is this problem due to erraneous compile options and modules or something else?

any help is appreciated.
