Back to the original quiestion....
I really don't think "Ethical Backing" enters into it. Debian and Gentoo are two different (though oddly complimenting) ways of distributing software.
This as I write the post using Gentoo installed on my Sony Viao across a wireless link using bleeding edge drivers that make Debian "Unstable" look like "Potato".
