Gentoo DSL setup problems

Hey everyone,

They didn't have a Discussion board for Gentoo specifically on this board and I thought that because Gentoo requires you to build your OS from the bottom up this might be a good place to post.

I'm trying to get connected to the internet with DSL. When I'm booted to the livecd (gentoo install disk) it loads a linux kernel already setup off of the cd. From there you download the sources you need to setup your own OS.

When I'm boot to the cd it has rp-pppoe pre installed. When I run 'adsl-start' after runing through adsl-setup I'm able to connect just fine. The install also goes through without a problem.

When I'm done installing my kernel and all of my modules and restart to my hard drive I can't connect to the internet.

I've installed rp-pppoe and even dhcpcd. I've set the /etc/conf.d/net file as 'iface=eth0="up" '. Which is what it says to do in the gentoo instructions.

When I start into Gentoo I get the message 'eth0 unknown; interface doesn't exist". When I run 'adsl-start' it times out.

If I change the net file to 'iface_eth0="dhcp" it says it can find it but doesn't get a proper IP address (obviously because I'm not connected to a DHCP device).

Does anyone have any advice?

Thanks in advance

Wrong, it should just go in the main Distributions forum as it's still not LFS. It's been moved at this time.

Not sure about Gentoo but ...

With FC1 you don't have to have eth0 up. In fact, it's suggested that you do not bring it up nor assign it an IP address. I came across postings stating that you may need an IP address, but in my case I don't.

Perhaps 'iface=ppp0="up" ?

In my case, the config file for pppoe is /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-ppp0
It can also be /etc/pppoe.conf on some distros

Perhaps this page will help: http://www.linuxathome.net/pppoe.php (even though it's about an rpm based system).

Good luck. Perhaps LQ will add a Gentoo forum in the future.
