gentoo based distro
Does anyone know of any gentoo based distros that offer an easy install? The portage in gentoo sounds very interesting but the install is intimidating from what I hear.

Intimidating depending in what you fear. Anyway, answering the question, Ututo XS is a Gentoo based distro that installs in a different way; plus is 100% Free Software, and endorsed by Richard Stallman and the Free Software Foundation. But have in mind that nothing like the real thing: Ututo is not Gentoo, just Gentoo based.

Go here an scroll about 1/3 of the way down the page. There's a list of 19 distros based on Gentoo. But, why not use Gentoo. If you can read and don't try to get ahead of yourself, the install isn't really that intimidating. It can take awhile to compile everything the first time, so don't try to rush.

The base system only takes a couple of hours and you can get a GNOME or a KDE done while you sleep (you do sleep, right? ). Once you get that far, you can start multi-tasking...installing while you work. I'm just saying it's really not that intimidating.

Gentoo can be installed from another distro. This means you do not need to take down your computer. Set PORTAGE_NICENESS to 15 in your make.conf and you even won't notice the install is running. And you can stop emerge and use emerge --resume to continue.
