Post Gentoo 2005 x86, error in stage3 when updating the baselayout


Hi guys

I decided to use stage3 whe installing gentoo, and i was going to update the baselayout with this command:

CONFIG_PROTECT="-*" emerge baselayout


That is when i get this error:

checking for C compiler defualt output... configure: error: C compiler cannot create executables
Can anyone tell me what is wrong?
