Gentoo 1.4 dependency conflict in emerge system
 

Hi!

I'm building a Gentoo server, and am installing the Pentium 3 stage 2 tarball from Knoppix, using the Gentoo installation manual on their website.

I've followed all the steps without a hitch, chrooted, emerge sync, right up to the point where I'm doing: emerge system

I seem to have run into an odd circular dependancy. I can't post exact details since I don't have an SSH daemon running on the box and I'm currently at work, but here's the gist of it:

During the emerge system, it wants to upgrade python, from 2.x<current version>.r4 to 2.x.r20 or thereabouts - the revision was in the 20s. In order to do so, it needs to upgrade portage, so it tries to emerge a newer version of portage - however, the portage version has a dependency of python 2.x.r16, and I only have r4. So it then tries to emerge python... and can't because it needs portage.

So when I do emerge portage it tells me I need to emerge python, and when I do emerge python it tells me I need to emerge portage.

This strikes me as odd, because I'm using the official release and the official installation guide, and have followed the steps to the letter. Google has failed me.

Has anyone had this problem before? Any ideas?

Did you do 'emerge rsync'?I had all kinds of issues with stage2 and stage3 installs a while ago and just went with stage1.

Did an 'emerge sync' as recommended by the install manual.
Don't know what the difference between sync and rsync is, but I'll try it when I get home.

The only difference ebtween a stage 1 and stage 2 system is the bootstrap, right? Using precompiled packages for gcc and basic system tools, rather than compiling? They've already specified better compile options for P3 than I would have used - taught me a couple, in fact - so I don't have a problem using their compilations.
How would compiling my own bootstrap resolve this kind of dependency?

emerge rsync did it. Still don't know what the difference is, but it's now compiling.

Good - those gentoo installs are getting more difficult by the day for some reason the doc's never keep up with the actual install.My AMD64 is killing me.

Just wondering ... why is this in the Debian forum?

Ummm.... well... because there's no Gentoo forum.. and Gentoo's debian based... and because I didn't know you could post to the root "distro" forum and not a subsidiary....
