What are the free distributions ?

Best place for info on the distributions is www.distrowatch.org. Check it out, it should have all the information you need. Plus, it's easier to list the ones I know you have to pay for, which is far fewer than the free ones. Anyone please correct this if you find it to be wrong, but Novell's Suse is now proprietary? Actually, if this is false could someone please let me know where to get the iso's for 9.2? I'd love to try it out, but have had a hard time finding the iso's.

Note that, as far as I know, You cannot get any updates for Novell Desktop Linux without paying for the subscription correct??

hansi, almost all of the Linux distributions are free. Some, such as Novell, Red Hat, etc... are going corporate to offer better support for the business use of Linux systems. But even these companies generally offer a free version of their product... Novell produces SuSE, Red Hat sponsors Fedora Core...

The only one I know of that just DOES NOT offer a free version is Linspire(formerly Lindows) simply because it integrates too many proprietary softwares with it...

Not strictly true. There are often "coupons" offered to allow you to download it for free. However, as stated before, www.distrowatch.com lists over 100 distros - the majority of which can be downloaded without cost. Also see our Distro Review section, our members have rated and reviewed a number of distros.

Free distributions are supposed to be downloadable full distributions, but without the right for the original writer's service.

Do a google search at www.google.com.au/linux and search for "Free Distributions"

Not that I would ever want to use Linspire, but if I had a free copy, I could surely use it to help someone else out.. :)
